EMBROIDERING THE KERCHIEF
excerpt
By the seashore the blonde girl sits
embroidering a golden-threaded kerchief
for her groom, a present at her wedding.
The sea and islands she embroiders on it,
the endless sky with myriad brilliant stars,
the fields of blazing flowers on the earth
a mountain of enormous height
with dawn advancing from behind its peak
and at its top a strip of rosy-colored sky
and clearest waters, silvery and diaphanous,
along the mountain’s sides, in its ravines,
dark schisms from millennia of erosion,
she embroiders, with green and silky thread
and flocks of sheep in each wide plain
and shepherds from afar so vivid
one could hear their flutes and rural songs
the bleating of lambs and hymns of trees…
