Sunny Side

And the mother said
to the child who
scraped his knee
playing football: bravo!

Light my slope and give me courage
the mountain said—
to endure the ache of my heart
gazing the other side where
apparitions and ghosts lurk
in rocky pleats, in shadowy
thoughts, in your absence
Let me bask and take stock
a path to choose
in light or in darkness
as they both need each other
to define who they are
the Great Spirit
embracing them in the painter’s
sunlit imagination
