Edinburgh Castle
Imposing megalith visible from space
of the upper firmament, scary dream, a
nightmare of man deep in its bowels
groaning man in the hands of a torturer
holding the whip, punishing the flesh of
the apostate, rebellious man of fortune
held deep in sunless dungeon, keeping
company to the rats sauntering about,
searching for skin scraps, fallen muscle
distanced from bone, as the master
in the upper chambers was entertained by
young females and other flesh neutered,
while the man in the castle’s depths
groaning at the whipping of his back
sunless hallways answer with personal
message for a better future life;
oh, Muse of pain, what else a man
can endure to justify your axiom:
man in the hands of man
forever mutilated or slaughtered
