Dina’s poetry touched me for its plain yet dynamic simplicity. Deeply thought poems enhanced by her crystal clear structures with their convincing affirmations on the treasure of being human. Poems with lucid images, structures and themes which remain in the mind long after the book is put aside; a different kind of book, different kind of poetry that originates in a different environment where also people live, with their existential concerns, their struggle to find a footing in a modern world that changes appearance as easily as a chameleon, people whose deep emotional scars these poems describe in the simplest yet unprecedented way. I feel proud to have them translated into English and I would like to see them being accepted, embraced and understood by all Canadian poetry lovers irrelevant of where these poems have originated.

Η ποίηση της Ντίνας Γεωργαντοπούλου μ’ άγγιξε με τον απλό αλλά δυναμικό της ύφος. Βαθειές σκέψεις που εμπλουτίζονται από τις κρυστάλλινες δομές της και τους πειστικούς αφορισμούς που αναφέρονται στο θησαυρό που λέγεται άνθρωπος και με ευκρινείς εικόνες που διατηρούνται ολοκάθαρα στο νου για ώρα μετά που το βιβλίο έχει κλείσει. Διαφορετικό είδος ποίησης από όλα όσα έχω ασχοληθεί μέχρι τώρα, βιβλίο που γεννήθηκε σ’ ένα διαφορετικό περιβάλλον που κι εκεί άνθρωποι ζουν με τις υπαρξιακές τους ανησυχίες, τον αγώνα τους να βρουν μια βάση στο μοντέρνο κόσμο που αλλάζει μορφή όσο εύκολα κι’ ένας χαμαιλέων, άνθρωποι με βαθειά χαραγμένες συναισθηματικές ουλές που τα ποιήματα αυτά περιγράφουν με τον πιο απλό αλλά ανεπανάληπτο τρόπο. Νιώθω περήφανος που τα μετάφρασα στ’ αγγλικά κι ελπίζω να τ’ αποδεχτεί, να τ’αγκαλιάσει και να τα κατανοήσει ο Καναδός λάτρης της ποίησης άσχετα από το τόπο της καταγωγής τους.

Little sins of the night
wait for me
to travel to other nights
resembling my small
gathered shivers
my bigger sins try
to find space

for not embarking

Νυχτερινές Αμαρτίες
Μικρές νυχτερινές αμαρτίες
με περιμένουν
να ταξιδέψω σ’ άλλες νύχτες
όμοιες με τα μικρά μου μαζεμένα
σκιρτήματα όταν οι μεγάλες
θα προσπαθούν
χώρο να βρουν
στη προσευχή
που θα ζητώ συγχώρεση
γιατί δε ταξίδεψα.
about the author
Dina Georgantopoulos was born in Vrahati, Corinth. She studied at the Law School of Athens. Her poems have appeared in various literary magazines on line and in paper form. “Caressing Myths” is her first poetry book outside Greece.
about the translator
Manolis (Emmanuel Aligizakis) is a Greek-Canadian poet and author who has written three novels and numerous collections of poetry. His articles, poems and short stories in both Greek and English have appeared in various magazines and newspapers in Canada, United States, Sweden, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Australia, and Greece. His poetry has been translated into Spanish, Romanian, Swedish, German, Hungarian languages and has been published in book form or in magazines in various countries. His translation book George Seferis-Collected Poems was shortlisted for the Greek National Literary Awards, the highest literary recognition of Greece.
