POEM BY HARIS VLAVIANOS
THE COOKOO’S NEST (AT HELICON)
for Maria Topali
Suddenly a deranged man
with a hat appeared
from behind the tree
and started shouting:
if it doesn’t rhyme it isn’t a poem
it isn’t a poem if it doesn’t rhyme
she was a little afraid
and started walking backward
but I told her not to worry
since as many hairs were missing
from his bald head
and for this reason the hat
as many and more sprang up
from his tasteless verses.
Un caso triste
Camoes would have said
but not dendo di memoria
a sad footnote
in the history of poetry
she laughed like a child
and started walking
with steady steps
we continued our walk
without looking back
his shouts vanished
as we passed the stone bridge
what an unbelievable story
