Double Expectation
This was all; the dream in the middle; a short break
between two postponements and two regrets. I’ll
come back, he had said, I’ll stay motionless in front
of the closed door knowing that you wait behind it.
I won’t knock, but with you I’ll listen to the shut out
and the unheard until the afternoon newspaper sellers
with their loud voices open wide the door toward
a brighter space, in a more common, needed dimension
into which we are both absent.
