Christmas of 1943
The holidays were densely populated
women hug green branches; they don’t cry
the old National Garden carries
three dead swans on its shoulders
and the boys throw breadcrumbs to the sky.
The holidays have a smooth face
a small Christ in each tear of the forgotten one
a little lamb, a drop on her frozen palms
a starry bird pinned in her hair
