Lila was safely tucked away under the covers and a
fully clothed Cindy lay on the sheets.
Climbing into his own bed, Joel slipped off to sleep. Later that
night, he was awoken by Cindy, as her naked body slid beside
him. The two of them drifted off to sleep with a feeling of total
contentment.
The next day was a day of leisure at the Circle H. Harry
showed up around ten a.m. It was nearly two o’clock by the time
that Tanya returned home, and after a quick “hello,” she drifted
off to her bedroom to catch up on some sleep. She had spent the
entire night talking with the wise old doctor, and after checking
in on her dad on the way back to the Circle H, she thought she
might just sleep forever.
Cindy and Lila spent the day playing in the yard. Lila and
Buddy hit it off so well that Cindy was able to sit and relax with
Joel, who thought that now was a good time to have that conversation
with Cindy about their future, but again, fear kept him
from going there. What am I afraid of? he asked himself. He knew
the answer: Rejection. Only once before, had he given his love,
his real love to a woman, his first wife Carolyn, and where did
that get him?
So now, in his mind, to ask Cindy to live with him would be
exposing himself to the same kind of pain and anguish that had
led him on his last stampede of self-destruction. He had gotten
over the pain of losing Carolyn, but he could never get over the
pain of losing his precious baby daughter. And every time he saw
Lila he also thought of his own daughter.
So there he was with Cindy. He knew that this woman and her
lovely daughter were the best thing that had happened to him in
many years. He also knew that the fears of his past kept him from
doing what he really wanted. His heart wanted Cindy and Lila to
come and live with him on the Circle H. Finally, as evening
approached, Cindy announced that she was heading back to
Great Falls with Lila, and as they drove out of the ranch yard,
they left a very confused Joel Hooper.
