The extreme cool days of the previous month were a contrast to the
warm weather they had these last days. Clouds appeared here and
there just enough to tell people that winter hadn’t gone yet. Some
trees had started the annual change with the first sign of buds.
Migratory birds had mostly arrived from their journey, which had
started in the tropical climates of Northern Africa. In the countryside,
the farmers were organizing the fields for the early summer
vegetables and fruits.
All the fields of tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons had to be
cleared of all the weeds and fertilized, and the water supply line had
to be put in place. There was so much work to do, and Hermes’ father
had his share of all that, especially this year with his new greenhouse
in place.
Hermes had spent his hours in deep thought about what to do
with the dean’s offer. Two days had gone by. He knew his uncle and
aunt would understand that whatever his
decision might be, they would accept it with pleasure. Yet,
he had to consider his parents’ position if he had to go abroad for
a while. He didn’t like the idea of hurting them in any way, but this
was his chance to get in a place from where he could create changes to
the things he would like to see, to the things he had dreamt of all his
life, things he felt he was destined to follow and accomplish, things
he had thought deeply over the years, things which he had in his
mind and which would turn things around in the society, especially
regarding the betterment of the general population and their lives.
Then there was Eleni: he loved this girl, and he didn’t want
to let her go. However, she had implied her desire for a more solid
relationship, and he knew that she meant marriage. Hermes was not
ready for a promise of this kind, regardless of when it took place. Now
with this opportunity in front of him, she was a bit uptight, as she
didn’t like him to go away from her for so long.
