Clouds hung like a shroud over Emblem as Tyne made her way down
Main Street to the grocery store. But her heart felt light, and she
could not suppress the excitement she felt knowing that Cam would
arrive late this afternoon. He would be hungry after his long drive
from Calgary, so Tyne and her mother had taken extra care planning
the dinner menu. Her dad had requested his own favourite – roast
beef and Yorkshire pudding. Tyne had offered to make an apple pie
because Cam liked her pies. She must remember to pick up ice cream
to top it off.
How we spoil these men, she thought as she pushed open the door
to Norm Rowan’s grocery store. But it was a nice thought, and she was
smiling as she made her way to the counter. The lady giving her grocery
order to Mr. Rowan turned around when she heard Tyne approach.
“Oh, Tyne, it’s you. How are you, dear?” Rose Cresswell, Morley’s
mother, beamed at her. “It’s so good to see you. We heard you were
home. How’s your father?”
Tyne returned the greeting. She felt none of the awkwardness she
had expected to feel when she saw Morley’s parents again. Rose’s
smile was warm and sincere.
“My dad’s doing well, thank you, Mrs. Cresswell. He’s amazing,
really.”
“And I’m sure a lot of the credit for that goes to the nursing care
he has.” Rose patted Tyne’s arm. “It’s really very good of you, Tyne, to
leave your job to look after him. I think a person does so much better
if they’re able to stay in their own home.”
Tyne smiled. “It was something I had to do. But I’m going back to…
