“I’m sorry the boys didn’t get the field finished, honey,” Tyne said to
Morley later that evening. They were relaxing on the sofa in the living
room of the quiet house that, less than an hour earlier, had been
humming with activity. “But I was so thankful they made it back
to the safety of the barn before the storm hit.” She turned towards
him on the sofa with a slight frown. “But I might ask what you were
thinking to stay out in that weather? You were soaked.”
Morley grinned and reached to take her hand. “Sorry, hon, I
shouldn’t have worried you like that but I wanted to get those heifers
in; I was afraid they’d spook and crash through fences. And you
should have seen the way they were huddled together under that big
aspen. They could have been hit by lightning.”
Tyne gave his arm a shake. “And so could you have been hit by
lightning. Please don’t ever do that again.” Then she softened and
smiled. “But I have to admit I didn’t even know you were out there
until you told me. I thought you were in the barn with the boys.”
“Ah ha, so it was all show about being worried. Tyne Cresswell,
you’re a fake.”
She chuckled, then sobered quickly. “I suppose I was worrying
about Rachael. There’s something going on with her, Morley. Until
last weekend I thought she was doing well and we were breaking
through the barrier. She seemed more open in talking to me.”
“Do you think she’s still feeling bad about Saturday night?”
Tyne nodded. “Perhaps, but I think it’s more than that. She seems
restless … unsettled. Sometimes I think she’s brooding, then she’ll
be fine for a while. And on and on it goes.” Tyne turned to look into
Morley’s face. “Is it just teenage angst? I don’t remember being like
that when I was that age. Oh, I had my share of crushes and broken
hearts but they were short-lived. Somehow, I don’t feel this is a boy
thing with Rachael. As far as I know she’s never had a crush – a real
crush – on any boy.”
“Or would we be the last to know?” Morley asked gently.
