GIVING OURSELVES
If we gave ourselves to youth
and wholly loved each living soul,
if we weren’t the last nor yet the first
to do this, yet our ardor is expressed in it
and over the wild darkness of the abyss
and far away from life’s commotion:
we won’t pave the traitor’s path
nor leave such footprints on the soil.
And if our belief in the illusion of another life
didn’t sweeten the sadness of our souls,
if non-existence cannot fool us,
we, the worldly and unearthly too,
shall say we’ve lived to fight
in life and death on equal terms.
