Like an angry animal facing a foe, the hackles rose on Tyne’s neck as memories surfaced – memories of her dad and Arthur Tournquist plotting to get her and Cam together, in spite of the fact that she was all but engaged to Morley.
Is it happening again? It’s too late, Dad, why don’t you leave it alone? How dare you?
Jolted back to the present by Arthur’s voice, she heard him say, almost as if he had read her thoughts. “Your dad asked if I could help, Tyne. He’s very upset. I told him I’d do everything possible from this end. I wonder if I can see you today, and I’ll explain my plans.”
Chagrined, she stumbled backwards and fell into the nearest chair. Consumed by guilt, she choked back tears. “Yes … yes, of course, I’d love to see you. I’m going to the hospital in a few minutes, but I can see you later.”
“Of course,” Arthur said, and she heard the sympathy in his voice. “Your dad told me about the children. If you can get away, can we meet for lunch, perhaps?”
She readily agreed, and they arranged to meet at the main hospital entrance at one o’clock. Tyne replaced the telephone receiver in its cradle. She sat for several moments in a sort of daze, guilt washing over her in waves. Then she covered her face with both hands and whispered, “Forgive me, Daddy, how could I doubt you? After all we’ve been through, why did I distrust you now?”
Arthur Tournquist picked her up at the Holy Cross at the arranged time. They spoke little as they drove to the restaurant he had chosen. He had not embraced her as she had half expected, nor had he shown any inclination towards goading her good-naturedly as he used to. Although Tyne appreciated his discretion, his unnatural reserve worried her. Was he more concerned about Morley than he appeared on the surface?
In the modest little restaurant not far from the Holy Cross, he took charge and ordered for them. Then he sat back and looked at her with a smile. “So, how have you been, Tyne? Except for these last few weeks, I mean?”
