His aunt was happy for his call and couldn’t wait until she’d
talk to her mother about it. His uncle Demetre was at home, busy
with some paperwork, when Hermes came down from his room on
his way out.
Aunt Maria was there and hugged him.
“Have a good time, my son. Magda is a very good girl.”
He said goodbye, thinking that yes, they were all good girls,
until they weren’t. Until they liked to experience things like all
youngsters, quite naturally so, he thought, and with this thought, he
smiled. He walked for about half an hour and found Magda waiting
for him at a small coffee bar they had agreed to meet. She was wearing
a blue mini skirt and a white blouse; she was as tall as Hermes and
had a very stylish figure. He leaned over and kissed her on her cheek.
“Hello, Magda. Sorry, I’m late.”
“Hi, Hermes, no worries. I believe I came here a bit early. Would
you like to sit down for a while, or would you prefer to go?”
He agreed to sit a while, and when the server came, he ordered
two cold coffees. They sat back and chatted. She was interested in
what he was going to do abroad. He gave her all the details and plenty
of ideas of what he expected this place, Canada, might be. His voice
underscored his optimism and enthusiasm, and Magda truly understood
and appreciated his forward approach. She also mentioned the
difficulties of one emigrating to a place where he knew no one, but
Hermes’s enthusiasm was the catalyst that supported his arguments.
“I admire your courage,” she said, “I don’t know if I’d have the
guts to go so far away for so long. It must be quite stressful.”
“Well, it could be in a way, although I try not to let it sit in my
mind that way. I’m excited to go because it will give me the chance
to look at how other people in the world do things and how they go
about their daily stuff.”
She smiled at him. Her eyes got caught on his features: his dark
complexion, smooth line of lips, quite inviting to her desires, his
bright irises, the medium-thick eyebrows that he often raised when
he wanted to underscore something.
