‘I thought maybe a pool-room, a smoking-room, and a bar perhaps.’
‘Actually there is one small extra room,’ said Clifford, as he placed the cups and the plate on the table. ‘But it’s outside and separated from the house by at least twenty-five yards.’
‘Couldn’t you bring it closer on cold winter nights, Clifford?’ John asked.
‘I’m getting our master-builder, Mr Anderson here, to work on the problem of that particular appendage to the house.’ Clifford returned to the kitchen.
‘If you had said “appendix” I’d have recommended a surgeon,’ John said, smiling at his own joke, which no one else appeared to have noticed. ‘I should think Ian has enough to work on. Seems to me he has his hands full as it is.’
‘I think I can squeeze in another little job or two,’ Ian said.
‘Yes, I bet you can,’ said John.
