Fog
Fog thickens over the backyard
buttering shrubs and hedges
lathering corners and shadows of
open space like a heavy shawl
over the body of a dead soldier
like your shout over my soft
whisper like a chick’s call
to parent and frost-darkened trees
vacant of leaves but potent still
trees perched next to one other
like wood marionettes set to be
shaken and rejuvenated by
April sun rays ready to be startled
by the moving unchangeable
