…sessions such as sports and field meet practice.
These we looked forward to most, a
chance to get outside and play or compete.
Teachers were just as susceptible to late afternoon
blahs as the students, and likely
looked forward to finishing with us for the
day and sending us on our way home.
Yet every teacher I had during those days
was conscientious and genuinely interested
in our progress as students, this in spite of the
crowding of classrooms with four to five
grades and of the meagre resources. They, too, were part of the pioneering
environment of that era.
The final minutes dragged painfully. When the teacher started
the dismissal, assigning final homework instructions and special
reminders for the following day, we packed our books, keeping
the carrying load to a minimum, ready to charge out and start for
home. School could be enjoyable but heading home on a brilliant
spring afternoon was a special pleasure.
